That's a reasonable take. It, however, loses out a bit on the nuance of being hesitative/unused to being friends with girls. This is perhaps not something that's necessary to reflect this explicitly, but something we decided to move a bit further to the foreground.

To continue for discussion's sake, I don't think younger Takahara is showing any hesitance about being friends with a *girl* at all.
I think by "こんな女の子なら" he's just referring to her as a girl just because the Kamome character is a girl. A more 1:1 could be "If there were a girl like that, I'd love be friends with her." Kamome character is being referred as girl just like you'd refer any other person, "If there was person like that..."
