@Northicc: No, but you seem to be an a$$hole on purpose.
After downloading, it's clear that it's a DVD remux which explains the file sizes, but there's no indication in the description or file names that this is a DVD remux.
So what's wrong with asking? Gegege no Kitaro is from 1968 and has a quarter of the file size.
@kamineko i was just kidding, no need to get angry.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with asking, but before asking always make sure to check the files first. Also yeah, they should have added more info on the raw they used ww.
@kamineko me and my team are still relatively new to fansubbing. if you can point us in the direction where we can learn more about good encoding that will reduce the file sizes but not completely screw over the quality i would appreciate that
@karkki: What you do is not wrong, just a bit more info about it would have been nice. At least it would avoid me getting riled up by @Northicc's post and lashing out.
But transcoding is dying, most people don't bother for DVDs and do a DVD remux like you did. So, nothing wrong with that.
@kamineko ill include more video quality information for our next release then. as for the series, i think i will keep using these DVD remux raws until we can get something better. one of my members is looking into how to do better encoding
I am no encoding expert, but just to see what would happen, I tried to use your remux with `for i in /srv/media/\[hayden\ fansubs\]\ Himitsu\ No\ Akko-Chan\ \(1969\)\ -\ 1-25\ Batch/\[hayden\ fansubs\]\ Himitsu\ No\ Akko-Chan\ -\ Episode\ ??.mkv; do ffmpeg -i "$i" -pix_fmt yuv420p10le -c:v libx265 -preset slow -crf 18 -c:a copy -c:s copy -profile:v main10 -x265-params bframes=8:psy-rd=1.5:psy-rdoq=2:aq-mode=3:ref=6 "${i/h\/\[hayden\ fansubs/h\/\[kamineko}"; done`.
Your remux has 7269 kb/s, this H.265 encode has still 6817 kb/s which is ridiculously high for DVD resolution. But the grain is so high that I tried to play it safe. From my quick test, it looked OK, not drastically worse.
Resulting file size is 687 MB, compared to 1.3 GB -- roughly half the file size for the price of transcoding for 11 hours (roughly real time on a i5-13400F).
Is it worth it? You decide.
PS: I would love if someone could come up with better encoding parameters.
