Orphan is proud to present the first English-subtitled version of the 1996 movie *Chocchan Monogatari* (*Chocchan's Story*). Based on an autobiographical story for children by Kuronayagi Cho, mother of the famous actress Kuroyanagi Tetsuko, it tells about Cho's life as a wife and a young mother before and during World War II. It's another fine addition to Orphan's releases about this terrible period. And like *Hoshizora no Violin*, a violin has a prominent role.
The heroine is a musically inclined teenager studying in Tokyo. There, she falls in love with a promising young violinis, Kuronoyagi Moritsuna. Although her father disapproves, they elope and start a family, leading a poverty-stricken but happy life. But after Pearl Harbor, the war starts to hit closer and closer to home. Moristuna is drafted, food and medicine become scarce, and the firebombings of major cities drive them into the countryside. After harrowing hardship, the war ends, but the prospects of a happy ending seem slight.

R2J DVD source. The DVD is badly mastered, with serious video and audio flaws, hopefully fixed, at least partially, in the encode. See [this blog entry](https://collectr.blogspot.com/2025/11/chocchan-monogatari.html) for more details. Despite the source issues, I highly recommend *Chocchan Monogatari*.
