HandBrake is meant for basically blind people who just want to smash their shitty marvel movie collection or whatever down into a blocky, smeary mess to save space on their small home NAS and don't know or care what the term "generational loss" means in an encoding context. On the more generous side, it's also meant for people importing raw footage from a digital camera or something and needing to turn it into something people can actually watch on youtube or something. But at least at that point they are working from true-blue digital raws.
